Adapters are used for converting one type of cable to another. Here are the ones you’ll come across the most:
HDMI to DVI
These types of adapters allow DVI-capable devices display video from HDMI sources and vice versa. You need to be careful, though, because older computers with DVI aren’t able to support televisions, only monitors. So before you purchase a PC with DVI, make sure it can support television formats, not just monitors. You’ll also want to make sure that your DVI component supports High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), because copy protection requires it in order to view the best quality video images. Also, since DVI is used for video signals only, you’ll need a separate audio cable.
M1 to component video
Connect the M1 port on your projector display to a component video source using this type of adapter. This gives you HD capabilities and allows you to hook it up to your cable or DVD player.
M1 to DVI
If your projector or monitor has an M1 port, this adapter allows you to convert it so that it’s capable of receiving a DVI signal. Now you can connect a DVI signal cable to an M1 projector display. There are three forms of DVI, so you’ll need to make sure you have the appropriate adapter. DVI-D is the standard, transmitting only digital signals and is compatible with HDMI. DVI-A handles only analog signals, while DVI-I works with both.
HDMI to HDMI (Female to Female)
With female connectors on both ends, this cable is used for creating a multi cable connection. Simply plug the male connector from one source into one end and the male connector from your second component into the other end, and you’ll be able to easily extend your HDMI connection.
HDMI to HDMI (Male to Female)
HDMI connectors come in two sizes. While most ports use the standard size, many components, including the increasingly popular Apple products, have smaller ports. With a mini male connector on one end and a standard female connector on the other, this adapter converts your standard-sized connector into a mini one appropriate for smaller ports.
